The prayer for peace is the last b'racha of the Amida. It asks for peace for us, our community, our country. The morning counterpart is Sim Shalom. Why are there two versions, one for morning and one for evening? Probabaly because two ancient Jewish communities came together and since neither wanted to give up its beloved prayer for peace, they compromised and had one for the morning and one for the evening.
What do you think?
We had a fun activity this past Sunday. We wrote poems about peace. First, we brainstormed words about peace: acceptance, quiet, thunderstorm were only a few of the many words the class came up with. Then the class was asked to write a poem using one of three choices of poetry: haiku (a haiku: 5-7-5 syllables, reference to seasons, nature), rhyme (each line ends with a rhyme) or free style. The results were beautiful. Below are the poems that were written. If you were not there, please submit your own poem for peace! Feel free to leave it in the comments section.
Thunder is peaceful
Wind, rain, snow and ocean, too
All of nature is.

Thunder is peaceful
Wind, rain, snow and ocean, too
All of nature is.
I like to listen
I love music very much
It is calm
I love music very much
It is calm
Chillaxing with friends
Ocean crashing up to shore
Peace throughout the land.
Ocean crashing up to shore
Peace throughout the land.
Quiet. Nature. Friends.
Water flows across the earth.
Animals at peace.
Water flows across the earth.
Animals at peace.
Water slowing flows,
Thunder and lightening striking
Nature is peaceful.
Thunder and lightening striking
Nature is peaceful.
Peace is like nature,
there are some bad things and some good.
When I think of all the big bears
I realize that they are peaceful
just like chirping cardinals in the trees.
just like chirping cardinals in the trees.
Then I think of the people on earth.
They start wars, and they hurt a lot of people.
The animals in the woods are like
the quietness in a spa when you get a back massage.
the quietness in a spa when you get a back massage.
It is nothing like humans where we pollute and hurt things and others.
We should become a pack with others
even if they are different
like a pack of wolves.
If one is different, they accept them.
